Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with her twentieth gripping novel featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, whose examinations, fifteen years apart, of unidentified bodies washed up from the sea may be connected to a deadly new pestilence。

A storm has hit South Carolina, dredging up crimes of the past。

On the way to Isle of Palms, a barrier island off the South Carolina coast, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan receives a call from the Charleston coroner。 During the storm, a medical waste container has washed up on the beach。 Inside are two decomposed bodies wrapped in plastic sheeting and bound with electrical wire。 Chillingly, Tempe recognizes many details as identical to those of an unsolved case she handled in Quebec fifteen years earlier。 With a growing sense of foreboding, she flies to Montreal to gather evidence and convince her boss Pierre LaManch to reopen the cold case。 She also seeks the advice—and comfort—of her longtime beau Andrew Ryan。

Meanwhile, a storm of a different type gathers force in South Carolina。 The citizens of Charleston are struck by a bacterium that, at its worst, can eat human flesh。 Thousands panic and test themselves for a rare genetic mutation that may have rendered them vulnerable。

Shockingly, Tempe eventually discovers that not only are the victims in both grisly murder cases related, but that the murders and the disease outbreak also have a common cause…

I received this ARC via netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 I was really excited to win a galley of this as I’ve been a long time reader of the series。 I must say it did not disappoint。 The Bone Code is another solid showing for the Temperance Brennan series。 I’ve read almost the entire series, before reading this I did look back and notice I’ve missed the last two before this one。 The great thing about the series is that while there is some continuity in the characters, you don’t necess I received this ARC via netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 I was really excited to win a galley of this as I’ve been a long time reader of the series。 I must say it did not disappoint。 The Bone Code is another solid showing for the Temperance Brennan series。 I’ve read almost the entire series, before reading this I did look back and notice I’ve missed the last two before this one。 The great thing about the series is that while there is some continuity in the characters, you don’t necessarily have to read them in order because each case is different。 This one starts off when a cooler with two bodies inside washes up on shore during a hurricane。 Immediately Brennan gets flashbacks from a similar cold case in Canada。 She travels back to Canada to refresh her memory on the case。 In typical Brennan fashion she finds herself in a tangled web trying to figure out how the two cases are linked and how they may be linked to a current outbreak of an illness in South Carolina。 In a post Covid world, people get pretty anxious about how an illness transmitted by beloved pets is suddenly cropping up。 Brennan gets too close at one point, which results in an attempt to take her out of play。 Working with law enforcement on both sides of the US/Canada border Brennan helps solve both cases。 I enjoyed the familiarity of the characters and the intricate plot line。 Kathy Reichs has a way of interweaving various story lines that don’t seem connected at all。 My only qualm with this story was that it was a frantic build up and then it just kind of ended。 I can’t explain without giving away the ending, but it just felt rushed towards the end。 Regardless I won’t hesitate to pick up the next book in the series。 。。。more

One of the best books I've read in a long time。 Never-ending action, some on a more cerebral level, but easy to follow。 Genetic engineering at it's worst in 2 countries。 A must read! I just finished reading this brilliant book! I love Temperance Brennan I can not wait to read book #21 for now this story lives on in my mind! I gave this book four out of five stars because Often I despise the way she ended the chapters with cliffhangers That got no resolution in the start of the following chapter。

I enjoyed Kathy’s books from her first and look forward to all her new ones as she releases them。 I appreciate her story lines stay relative to current events, as well as stay affordable to read。 In these days of some publisher having books put out at high debut prices, Kathy seems to keep hers reasonable and easy to purchase without hesitation。 Thanks Kathy。

I felt this one was a return to form after the disappointment of the last couple of books。 Brennan wasn't as reckless and annoying this time around, Ryan's back with a bigger role to play for the first time in a while and it's about vaccines and DNA, which I'm a geek for。 Overall very enjoyable。 I felt this one was a return to form after the disappointment of the last couple of books。 Brennan wasn't as reckless and annoying this time around, Ryan's back with a bigger role to play for the first time in a while and it's about vaccines and DNA, which I'm a geek for。 Overall very enjoyable。 。。。more

After reading in the blurb this book was about a virus I almost skipped it。 But having read the first 19 knew I had to read this one and I’m glad I did。 It was good to see Tempe healthy with a new boss。 Good to have Ryan back in the picture。 The story was good, full of scientific information as usual。 I still love that Tempe travels to Montreal and love the French dialect。

Cathy

I was concerned going it because I thought the last book was dreadful。 But this one was much better。 Two sets of deaths so similar and of course Temperance knows this and jumps in。 Seems unrealistic but still fun。

Chance

Page turner for sure。 I’m going back to #1 in the series now。 I love the scientific jargon, only 4 stars bc there’s some filler in there that could’ve been left out but nothing I couldn’t skim over and keep up the pace。

Really a good read。。。。My hubby and I are enjoying it。 I listened to the book and the reader was very good。

Another great novel by Kathy Reichs! Still my favourite author and this book did not disappoint! (even with the updated COVID 19 added to the story line)

“DNA neither cares nor knows。 DNA just is。 And we dance to its music。” – Richard DawkinsThese phrases may not be commonplace to the average reader but, believe me, they play a big part in both Kathy Reichs and her protagonist Temperance Brennan’s worlds。 The twentieth novel to feature Temperance “Bones” Brennan is entitled THE BONE CODE and the quote above, which opens the novel, depicts the power of DNA and foretells what role it will play in this engaging forensic thriller。Brennan, who divides “DNA neither cares nor knows。 DNA just is。 And we dance to its music。” – Richard DawkinsThese phrases may not be commonplace to the average reader but, believe me, they play a big part in both Kathy Reichs and her protagonist Temperance Brennan’s worlds。 The twentieth novel to feature Temperance “Bones” Brennan is entitled THE BONE CODE and the quote above, which opens the novel, depicts the power of DNA and foretells what role it will play in this engaging forensic thriller。Brennan, who divides her time between Charlotte, NC, and Montreal, Quebec Canada, is in her office in Charlotte when things begin and about to leave the premises due to the incoming hurricane。 However, before she can make her exit to the safety of her home, she needs to greet the elderly guest who has been waiting for a long while in the lobby for her。 The seventy-three-year-old woman named Polly Beecroft is not there for help with a cold forensic case or to assist with a current one。 Rather she has brought with her three photos to show Brennan that depicts she and her identical twin, Harriet, who has since passed, in one of those photos。 Nothing remarkable until she pulls out a near identical photo that was taken in the late 1800’s that featured her grandmother and her sister, also identical twins。 It is then with the presentation of the third and final photo that Brennan becomes engaged and inquisitive。The Polly Beecroft story will play a role in THE BONE CODE, but it is not the principal plotline。 Kathy Reichs has a real doozey in store for her readers with the revelation of that main storyline。 The case starts when two bodies are pulled in from the shore, wrapped in plastic, bound with metal wires, and encased in drum containers。 When she shares this data with her partner, Andrew Ryan a Montreal Detective, who indicates that the remains sound identical to a case he worked in Montreal fifteen years prior。 This makes Brennan jump on the next plane to Canada in order to compare notes on both sets of victims to see if there is any connection between them。As the two of them are facing an unexpected snowy Montreal October as they investigate the cold case, they narrowly escape tragedy in the form of a vehicle that drives up the sidewalk at them。 Ryan, who shields Brennan from impact, is hospitalized with minor injuries。 They both recognize they have angered someone with their inquiries into the old case --- the question is who and why? Ryan makes a full recovery and continues to pursue the cold case while Brennan heads back to North Carolina to team up with another Police Detective who is overseeing the two unknown bodies found there --- unknown because teeth and fingers had been removed from the victims。 Their leads produce valuable information that points them in the direction of a missing mother and daughter。 Further investigation does tie the case to the Montreal one as it turns out both pairs were mother/daughter combos, and the two young girls were cyber-pen pals with each other who had met on a few occasions。 Now, Brennan and Ryan just needed to find out why these four seemingly innocent women had to die。It is during the final act of THE BONE CODE that everything will be revealed, and it of course deftly ties into the DNA Code we were promised from the start。 Kathy Reichs handles the forensic and genetic code details in such a manner that things never feel like they are going over the reader’s head。 Instead, it just adds another element or layer of credibility to a solid thriller。 This case really hits Brennan hard and when the Montreal victims are identified as Melanie and Ella Chalamet, she loses herself in their mysterious back story。 In a great moment, Brennan asks herself: “Who are you, Melanie Chalamet? Where did you come from? Why did you move to Canada and change your name? Whom did you fill with such rage or so seriously threaten that they took your life? And why your daughter’s?” These questions will all be answered and then some and, trust me, it will be well worth the wait。Reviewed by Ray Palen for Book Reporter 。。。more

Not my absolute favorite of the Temperance Brennan books, but totally worth the read。

Excellent entry in this series! Very scary, very timely look at vaccines, genetics, and science for money。 I love the books so much more than the series。Bonus points-the books set in Canada are the best, and while not strictly Canadian, this had enough to make me very happy

The Bone Code offers the reader three main stories。An old lady seeks the services of Temp to discover what happened to her grandmother’s identical twin 。 The only clue is a death mask from the early 1900s。 Temp swears she’s seen the woman in the mask before but can’t place where。The second is the gruesome discovery of two girls found in a plastic barrel off the coast of North Carolina killed in a similar method of a woman and a child found 15 years ago in Montreal。The third is a bacterial infect The Bone Code offers the reader three main stories。An old lady seeks the services of Temp to discover what happened to her grandmother’s identical twin 。 The only clue is a death mask from the early 1900s。 Temp swears she’s seen the woman in the mask before but can’t place where。The second is the gruesome discovery of two girls found in a plastic barrel off the coast of North Carolina killed in a similar method of a woman and a child found 15 years ago in Montreal。The third is a bacterial infection seems to be running amuck in temps home town。 Is there a connection?Temperance Brennan will attempt to find it with the assistance of Andrew Ryan, a Montreal detective and Temps love interest。This book is packed with medical jargon - because the author is a real forensic anthropologist, humour with the assistance of Temps best friend southern bell Ann and various investigators。In all a good read。If you like the Lincoln Lawyer or Harry Bosh mysteries I think you would like the Bones books。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I WANTED to love this book。 I love Tempe。 I have loved the previous books。 But this one feels opportunistic and spreads anti-vaccine rhetoric。 In a post Covid world (Covid is mentioned as being very in the past and all over now) how does Tempe not know what an MnRA vaccine is? And does the world need to be afraid of vaccines right now when we have selfish people continuing to put their lives and others in danger by choosing not to get vaccinated? 20 books in, and I’m still just as fond of both Tempe Brennan and Kathy Reichs。 This was another great installment in the series。 I love the dual setting of Montreal and Charlotte。 It’s like coming home for me to see the French and the descriptions of places and people that I’m familiar with。This was so well done and honestly left me guessing several times。 I thought I’d figured out the mystery a couple of times only to be proven wrong。 It was a fascinating and exciting read and very timely with 20 books in, and I’m still just as fond of both Tempe Brennan and Kathy Reichs。 This was another great installment in the series。 I love the dual setting of Montreal and Charlotte。 It’s like coming home for me to see the French and the descriptions of places and people that I’m familiar with。This was so well done and honestly left me guessing several times。 I thought I’d figured out the mystery a couple of times only to be proven wrong。 It was a fascinating and exciting read and very timely with its talk of vaccines。 Don’t get me wrong though-if you have Covid fatigue this takes place after Covid but does mention it in the context of the story and how people react to plot devices。I’ll be anxiously awaiting book 21。 。。。more

Several people in our blog have read the Bones Series but I have to admit I am very new to this series。Kathy Reichs create wonderful banter between the different characters that elevates the story above more dark mystery/Thrillers。 The story has amazing flow that keep readers enjoying every second。 The story characters are well bonded, interesting and worth reading。Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of The Bone Code

The Author writes another interesting and gut renching story, and continues to use Temperance as a punching bag。

Having read or listened to the previous novels, it felt like catching up with an old friend。Tempe is a forensic anthropologist who works on both sides of the border in Montreal and South Carolina。 When a medical waste container washes up in a Carolina storm and is opened, the contents are horrific。 Two bodies。 Tempe is called in and recognizes the way the bodies are wrapped is identical to an unsolved fifteen year old case in Montreal。 Could they be this far apart and related? What do I enjoy about this series? I like Tempe, her intellect, her drive, her tenacity - and yes her crime solving skills。 Those skills have been used in each and every book from Reichs。 She knows what she's writing -Tempe owns Reichs' real life skill set。 The mysteries and outcomes benefit greatly from this knowledge。 This latest is no exception with DNA is at the heart of The Bone Code。 I'll leave it there, but the plot is very, very current。 I always learn a lot from the medical and forensic bits of the plot。 The plotting for The Bone Code is intricate and will keep the listener on their toes。 In addition to this main plot, there are other seemingly disparate threads, with one of them eventually being connected to the bodies in the barrels。 Others are just 'shake your head' tales。Another constant thread in this series is Tempe's relationship with long time beau Quebec Detective Andrew Ryan, now a PI。 The dialogue between the two is fun and the romance believable。 And lets not forget well traveled Birdie - the cat。This was another great entry in this long running series。 I'm looking forward to #21!I chose to listen to The Bone Code and was very happy to see that Linda Emond was the reader。 She has narrated at least the last ten books in the series。 The continuity is great as she has become the voice of Tempe for me, matching my mental image。 She has an interesting voice - there's a slight gravelly undertone and it rises and falls within a single sentence punctuating a point, reaction or emotion。 A voice that carries an authoritative tone when needed。 And a voice that matches the age of the character。 Emond speaks clearly, enunciates well and is easy to understand。 She does a great job with the French phrases as well。 Emonds has interpreted Reichs' novel very well - an excellent performance。 。。。more

Good story despite the dataLoved the story line but too much scientific data。 Not what I look for in leisure reading even though it was very understandable。

Another excellent book by Kathy Reichs。 I am always amazed by her combination of using her medical knowledge as a PhD Forensic Anthropologist, and combining that with her skill at developing and writing a believable edge of your seat thriller。 She never ceases to amaze and fascinate me。 Truly an enjoyable and interesting read。
